Our co-op community parents banded together to create some simultaneous screen-free time for our kids. Sunday is 100% screen free. These boys entertained themselves for hours with nothing but cardboard, scissors, and tape. They worked together and brainstormed and planned. My living room is a disaster, and I couldn’t be more delighted.

My son put this ship together and I said, “It’s the Vermillion!” So here she sails.
We always end the year by setting our Christmas trees on fire. It always feels a little cathartic, like saying “Burn in Hell!” to all the crappy stuff we didn’t like that year. Sometimes the fire department shows up but they are cool about it. Then we roast s’mores and play games, and I drink many Diet Cokes so I can stay up until midnight and pretend to be happy about it. Happy 2026! May all your dreams come true.
Last school visits of 2025! Everything was amazing- the signs, the stickers, the snacks, THE KIDS!!! Oh my goodness, middle-grade readers are the absolute best. They gave me notes and hugs and high fives. And everyone said the librarian and I look like sisters. I see it!
Merry belated Christmas from the Shurtliffs.
Im not offended. My dad has great taste in music.
It’s what you’ve all been waiting for! The annual Shurtliff tacky ornament contest continues. Vote for your favorite!

It’s always fun to do school visits, but it is extra fun when you get to visit one of your high school bestie’s kids’ school! Rump is on their district’s Battle of the Books list! Good vibes.
@juliahalliday I’m looking at this photo, and I swear we could be sisters. If things don’t work out with our husbands, we can always fall back on our biker babe plan. PLAN B!!!

I have my fuzzy blanket, my cup of tea, the book I’m writing, and the book I’m reading. All I need is a fireplace! Some day…
