Last year I attended the conference Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers in Utah and absolutely loved it. Seriously, the children’s writing community out here is amazing, AMAZING! SPECTACULAR! Do you get my drift?

If you’re an aspiring children’s writer, this conference is the place to be. Holly Black. Allie Condie. Agents, editors, more amazing authors, illustrators and aspiring writers. It is a lot of bang for your buck. If you do the morning sessions you get TONS of professional feedback on your work and I’ve met some of my very best writing friends at this conference.

SO, in connection with WIFYR, there is a first line contest over on Chersti Neiveens blog. Chersti is one of the main assistants for the conference, a fabulous writer, and she just happens to be one of the very good friends I met at WIFYR. Prizes include a query critique from agent Mary Kole, who will be in attendace at WIFYR, a 5-page critique, $20 towards WIFYR tuition, and books.

So put in your awesome first line. Entries are due midnight on April 2nd.

  1. Way cool of you to pass this on!

  2. That conference looks wonderful! I could actually make it since I’m only a few hours away. I’ll have to see if I can swing it. Thanks for getting the word out.

    “Faith behind the fences”

There are very few books about the Japanese occupation of the former Dutch East Indies, in English.
I was one of those prisoners too, on the island of Java. I have written it all down in “my” English on my website; http://www.dutch-east-indies.com
Me too I am the eldest daughter, this month I’ll be 84 years old. My father was killed by the Kempeitai, my mother and two younger sisters had to leave the country we loved, after the war. I was 19 when I came to the Netherlands.
My name is Elizabeth van Kampen, my e-mail address is evkampen@home.nl Hope you will read me. Greetings from the Netherlands
