I am THRILLED to announce that I am the newest client of literary agent Michelle Andelman of Regal Literary!

AAAAAAAAHHHH! (Everybody scream and jump up and down!)

I have been rather quiet about my query process and the status of my writing projects in general. I’m kind of shy that way. I don’t like to be too open when it feels like the odds are stacked so high against me. (I hate failure! Rejection is torture! I’d rather keep it private.) And though this doesn’t mean my book will for sure get published, I feel like I’ve taken one big step toward my dream.

I’m so excited to move forward with Michelle. I truly feel I couldn’t have asked for a better match; someone who gets my style and voice and intuitively knows where it needs to go. And Regal Literary as a whole seems like an amazing team.

But I also know that none of this would have happened without dear friends who read my rough draft and offered savvy suggestions and heaps of moral support. Kate, Jen, Jenilyn, Krista, and Ali, thank you so much for all your help. You all rock and I love you.

Okay, this is starting to sound like the acknowledgments page at the back of a book. Yeah, we’re not there yet. Michelle and I will be doing some revisions together over the next few weeks before we go on submission.

Cheers all around!

If anyone wants to know more about this process, I’m happy to share. I just never know how much detail people want. So if you’re curious, ask away.

  1. YAY, LIESL! It’s still such exciting news! Congratulations!

I have a question for you: You mentioned that you felt really good about Michelle from the minute you first spoke to her and that she feels like a good match. What was it that set off those good vibes?

Woohoo!! Contratulations, lady! I’m soooo excited for you. 🙂 Ride that high…it’ll take you all the way through the revisions, I promise. It’s so awesome just to have the validation, you know?? YAY!

  8. Good for you! I think that the process of writing and sending out queries and finding an agent is very interesting; that’s why I read a lot of blogs that talk about it. That’s awesome that you found an agent, and it must be really exciting to get to start the next phase of your career as a writer.

    Thank you everyone!

Krista, a lot of it had to do with her enthusiasm. (You know when someone says they love your work, it’s hard not to love them.) But something that really grabbed me was how she could really pin-point and define what needed work. I knew my book wasn’t perfect, but sometimes it’s hard to figure exactly what isn’t working and what you need to do to make it better. Michelle has a wonderful editorial eye and that’s something I really wanted in an agent. Everything she said truly resonated with me.

I queried 30 agents. 4 read the full ms and Michelle was the one who offered rep.

  11. Huge congratulations! So happy for you. 🙂

Wow! I’m just catching up with more of your posts. Can’t believe that you got your agent in May 2011 and got your book deal in August 2011. How unbelievable! That is so incredible and huge accomplishment!

I think I’d love to know how long you were writing, day job, etc etc?
I think that’s my major discouragement now. I have no money for any classes or workshops whatsoever and work in a profession with 8-10 hour days (and a profession that I dislike). I worry i’m never going to “do enough” to realize my dreams. Maybe I’m being too anxious and need to step back and breathe and just focus on one thing at a time.
So much to learn, and I feel I just can’t absorb or grasp it all and feel so flustered at times!

Such a HUGE accomplishment that you have an agent, you have a book to be published (and an awesome looking book too with a good publisher). Just the fact that you create and COMPLETE stories is so amazing. The accomplishment! Wow 🙂
