Every year I look forward to the John Newbery Awards, the prestigious children’s literature awards given by the American Library Association. Sometimes I’ve read the winning book, sometimes I’ve never heard of it. One time I knew the winner of a Newbery Honor! (Kirby Larson, author of HATTIE BIG SKY was my first writing instructor. A beautiful book. Go read it.)

This year the Newbery Award goes to Rebecca Stead for
WHEN YOU REACH ME.

And I’m doubly excited because GUESS WHAT! No, I don’t know Rebecca Stead, but she’s going to be at an SCBWI event at my local bookstore in three weeks! Lucky me. And I get to bring super yummy cookies to the event. Lucky her!

Ms. Stead has a fun website here.

You can read the details of the Newbery Medal winner and Honors here.

p.s. I think it’s lame that “Newbery” gets flagged by spellchecker. I added it to the dictionary!
